Author's Note: Being left out can make a person's life sad, which is exactly how Claire Lyons feels. She tried everything to get into the group, but doesn't always succeed. This piece is written for my character analysis piece on how Massie Block changes throughout the story.
In the book The Clique, written by Lisi Harrison, one girl changes a girl’s mind who never could be changed. Massie Block was a rich young girl who had everything, until Claire Lyons came into her life. Clair was a young girl who wasn’t super rich but a had a sweet kind heart. The Clique or the populars is the group Massie was in and Claire wanted nothing more than to be in their group. All the girls in the group were all super rich which Claire was not, yet she still tried to fit in. Throughout the story, Massie learns a valuable lesson from a person she never thought she would ever talk to.
Life for Claire wasn’t very easy, she had to act as if she was in the group, but she knew on the inside she was rejected, but she still always stuck up for the four girls. The girls names were Kristen, Alicia, Dylan, and Massie. Those four girl’s attitudes toward Claire was only ever about rejecting her and being mean to her, since she was less fortunate. Claire learned that Kristen was on scholarship at their school, yet she kept her secret. Young massie, was the group leader of the populars, she controlled what they thought about everybody. Although, Massie didn’t want her friends being nice to her, they hung out with Claire when they found out what such a nice girl she actually was.
During the end of the book, Claire became better friends with Kristen, Alicia, and Dylan, while Massie got jealous of her. There was also one thing Claire had over Massie and that was Chris Abeley, Massie’s crush, she knew him from one of her friends. Layne was Claire’s friend, and also Chris Abeley’s sister. All their attitudes began changing when they saw she knew Chris Abeley. Massie’s changed the most, I feel that just because of who they know, shouldn’t be who you choose to be friends with. This part of the book reminds me of the what some people in the world do to others. Some people outcast one another or include one another depending on who they are and who they know. That could have been how Claire felt during the book. When Claire and Massie began talking alone for once, Massie finally realized how nice she is and how it doesn’t matter how much money someone has.
In the end, Massie’s attitude toward everyone is better than it ever was. One girl changed the way she thought about everything. Attitudes really can change from just one person. Now, the group has five people in it; and it might stay that way for a while. Hopefully, it does. Claire may not have the most money, but it’s what on the inside that really shows what is good about a person. Massie had learned something from Claire and it will stay with her forever. Even though, Massie thought she would ever talk to Claire, she taught her the most valuable lesson.
