Author's Note: Laying in a hospital bed not knowing what's coming next, but knowing that you are going to die soon; is exactly how Jamie Sullivan felt. Jamie had cancer and was going to die soon, so before she could die Landon, her boyfriend, proposed to her. This piece is my theme essay.
“It has been about 50 years since Jamie has passed and I still love and miss her the same way I had when she was here.” Landon spoke. Nicholas Sparks the author of the book A Walk to Remember and Lurlene McDaniel author of Breathless both include how a loved one has died from cancer. Surviving cancer is hard and sometimes people don’t always make it. The families and friends both have felt the pain in these books. I truly believe Landon had felt the pain the most out of everyone. In the book, A Walk to Remember ,written by Nicholas Sparks, the author shows us how learning to overcome the struggles in life is easier because of family, friends, attitudes, and love.
Although, Landon is a tough guy, he needed his family to help him overcome Jamie’s struggle. Family will always be there for you no matter what and Landon needed his family through this pain in his heart. For example, his dad wasn’t home much throughout his childhood but he gave money to Jamie so she could have at-home nursing. When Jamie, did pass away, his family was there for him through whatever he did. Family is a reason on why he was able to get through everything that happened in just a short period of time.
Even though, family can help someone overcome cancer Jamie’s attitude toward everything kept him going. Most people that have an illness, don’t take every day for granted as they should. Jamie didn’t at all though! For example, when she started slowly dying, she would just smile and listen to Landon read her the bible stories. Whenever anything bad would happen to her, she would just think, “It’s all in God’s plan,” and forgive the person for what they did. Landon saw how she always thought positive, even if she was slowly dying and that’s what kept him going. Few people, take every day as it comes but I have now learned to and so as Landon.
Furthermore, Jamie’s attitude truly kept him going, the most important thing to him was love. In Landon’s heart Jamie always had a special place after she dies. In the beginning of the book, Landon is 57 and still wears his wedding ring. When Jamie and Landon finally became friends, he found out her one wish was to get married before she died. Landon made that one wish come true! He was a true gentleman to her, which is what almost all women want in their husband. If Landon had truly never became friends Jamie, the rest of his life could have been all different.
Perhaps, Landon could have been in jail right now because of the old ways he was. Jamie was truly a miracle to Landon and will be always be forever. With the help of family, friends, attitudes, and love Landon learned how to overcome the struggles of life.
